Gem Books

We are trying to reinforce the love of books in grade 1! Gem Books are super special books that we really want to share with the students. They make us think by conveying a special message, warming our hearts and helping us to feel good on the inside. Today's Gem Book was 'Limu the Blue Turtle.'

The children had lots to say throughout the reading of the book.  Many of them predicted that the 'beady eyes' were the eyes of sharks. Other students commented on how they had never seen a blue turtle before!  After we shared the story, I asked the students to explain what they thought was the most important message of the book.  Fiona said that it was about being respectful. Liam thought it was all about kindness.  Alexandra commented that the book was about friendship. Christopher said it was all about helping each other out.  Siros thought the book was about hugging. William suggested that the book was trying to tell us to treat others how you like to be treated. They made so many wonderful connections to the 'Golden Rule' which we talk about each day in class when we say our 'Peaceful Pledge.'
