Gem Books

We are trying to reinforce the love of books in grade 1! Gem Books are super special books that we really want to share with the students. They make us think by conveying a special message, warming our hearts and helping us to feel good on the inside. Today's Gem Book was 'Limu the Blue Turtle.'

The children had lots to say throughout the reading of the book.  Many of them predicted that the 'beady eyes' were the eyes of sharks. Other students commented on how they had never seen a blue turtle before!  After we shared the story, I asked the students to explain what they thought was the most important message of the book.  Fiona said that it was about being respectful. Liam thought it was all about kindness.  Alexandra commented that the book was about friendship. Christopher said it was all about helping each other out.  Siros thought the book was about hugging. William suggested that the book was trying to tell us to treat others how you like to be treated. They made so many wonderful connections to the 'Golden Rule' which we talk about each day in class when we say our 'Peaceful Pledge.'

Math Talk Mondays

Math is everywhere!! Each Monday we will look at a new picture and find all of the math in it! What kind of math do you see as you are out and about with your child? When you are with your child, help him/her to build their math vocabulary and recognize that math is everywhere in the real world by pointing out the following:
-patterns
-shapes 2-D (circle, triangle, hexagon, square, oval etc.) and 3-D (sphere, cone, cylinder, cube)
-how things are sorted
-measurement terms (long/short/tall/wide/thin/thick/big/small, etc)
-quantity terms: more/less, most/least, equal
-counting everything and anything, count by ones, twos, five and tens
Math is literally everywhere. The more your child is engaged in conversations about math in the real world, he stronger foundation your child will have for building more complex math skills on as they grow up.

Building Classroom Community

Exploring our Discovery Table

If students find anything from nature they would like to bring in, they can  add it to our Discovery Table - as long as it is not moving....

Building Classroom Community

We read a GEM book today called 'The Gigantic Turnip'.  GEM books are special because they warm our hearts with a special message.  After listening to the story, our Grade 1 students turned to their elbow partner to share what they thought that message was.  William and Madelyn said, "we should all work together" and everyone agreed.  This was something the students also came up with earlier this week when sharing what they thought our class rules should be. We added it to our class list of names written by the students.
