Dinosaur Sculptures!

We have been reading the first book of the Magic Tree House series: 'Dinosaurs Before Dawn.' The students have really enjoyed this first adventure of the main characters Jack and Annie.  We used the book as our inspiration to create these wonderful dinosaur sculptures out of plastecine!

Updates

We had some SNOW DAY fun last week with this STEM activity:

This week we have been working on linear measurement using non-standard units of measure (i.e. cubes, paper clips). Students are learning to estimate first before measuring various objects in the classroom. We will continue with this next week.

In Science we are continuing our unit on Materials and Structures. Today students went on a scavenger hunt looking for objects in our room made of WOOD, PAPER, PLASTIC, CLOTH, and GLASS. Fun! Next week we will look at why some materials are chosen to make different objects (i.e. rubber - rain boots).

We continue to practice our reading strategies - "chunky monkey" is the one we are currently focusing upon. Keep reading!

Next week:

Friday, January 26th - PD DAY!

Today we played Subtraction Bowling' with a partner in order to practice our 'ten minus' subtraction facts. We rolled a ball at our 10 bowling pins. The number of pins we knocked down was what we subtracted from 10!

Wtih the new year here (Happy New Year!) we have been discussing what it means to set goals for ourselves. We kick-started our brainstorming about goal-setting by watchig this inspirational video by the 'Kid Present.' Check it out!

More Self-Regulation Tools and Strategies!

Today we read the book 'Peaceful Piggy Meditation' by Kerry MacLean. We introduced the 'stillness stone' which we will keep on our classroom prayer table. Whenever students feel that they need to take a break, they may find a quiet place to sit while they practice taking deep, calming breaths and rubbing the smoothe surface of the 'stillness stone'.
