The Grade Ones Are Hatching Chicks!

All three Grade One classes have chicken eggs in our incubators. We are hoping they will hatch on April 30th-May 2nd.  We have been learning about the incubator, the egg turner, different types of chickens, and parts of a chicken. Every few days we candle a few eggs with the ovascope which shows the children how the embryo is growing inside the egg. Yesterday, we saw blood vessels. We also learned about natural selection as one of the eggs had no blood vessels, meaning it was no longer viable. It had to be removed from the incubator. Today we will learn about other animals who lay eggs. It is an EGGS-ITING time in Grade 1!!

The Last Supper

Our Grade Ones celebrated the Last Supper with Jesus by listening to a reading of a play geared towards primary students. We had pitas, hummus, and grape juice in goblets.

Which Shape is Strongest?

Our Grade One scientists recently tested a cylinder, a rectangular prism and a triangular prism to see which was the strongest. We piled chapter books on top of each paper shape to test them. Cylinder won - way to go Olivia for sticking with your prediction!

The scientists were then set a challenge: build a chair out of newspaper to support Ms. Damiano's weight. They used their knowledge from our test to build their chairs. The scientists were very proud of their accomplishments and very amused by the chairs that failed to support Ms. Damiano's weight!

Reminder of our Lenten Project for the Shepherds of Good Hope!

Our school-wide Lenten project  is a toiletry collection for the Shepherds of Good Hope.  The Grade 1 classes have been asked to donate deodorant to the collection. Every little bit helps. We will be collecting all of next week!
