Winter Play Day!

We had a great time playing games outside during our Winter Play Day. Great team-building! We almost made it, but were forced indoors due to the rain. Board games were a big hit last block!

Tech Time!

Today we  had great fun exploring with various technology. We had three centres: Bee Bots, Sphero Balls and IPads. Using the Bee Bots, the students practiced programming them to move around in the space. The Sphero Balls are like mini robots that you control using an Ipad. They practiced moving them in all sorts of directions and at varying speeds. On the IPads, we used the Telegami App to make animations of ourselves and then record how we show the Gospel Value of Excellence.

'Whole, Part, Part' Subtraction Stories

When we talk about addition, we say 'Part, Part, Whole.'
For example: 3 (part) + 3 (part) = 6 (whole)
The opposite is true for subtraction. We say 'Whole, Part, Part.'
For example: 6 (whole) - 3 (part) = 3 (part)

Today the students made up their own subtraction stories using spare parts and an operations mat. Check out their stories!
"There were 12 chocolate chip cookies, I ate 10. I had 2 left."

"There were 10 chocolates, I ate 4 and had 6 left."

"There were 12 deer and 2 got caught by the honey badger. There were 10 deer left."

"My Dad got 5 shirts for his birthday. Alia returned 3. So he has 2 shirts left."

"There were 23 deer. 11 ran away. There were 12 deer left."

"I have 11 shells. I decided to take away 2 shells. That equals 9."

"I had 10 chocolates. I have 2 to my sister. Then I had 8 more left."

"I found 5 jewels but I lost 2. So I have 3 now."

Snowman Challenge

t

Students chose to work on their own or with a partner to create the tallest snowman they could. This was our first STEM activity (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). Plans were being revamped throughout this process. There was lots of talk amongst the students:

"How big should we cut the circles?"
"I think the biggest should go on the bottom because that is how snowmen look."
"I am going to tape this edge to that edge so it will be taller."
"I am going to use the tape to make it like Olaf from Frozen."
"I think we should try doing it this way instead. Let's make more smaller circles."
"Our snowman ended up wider. Ours is the widest now."

We kept challenging the students to use all of their paper, asking if it is the tallest one they could make.  Here are some photos of the process:
