Happy Chinese New Year!

We celebrated Chinese New Year which begins on January 28th, by listening to stories which explained the traditions and significance of some of the dishes. Students tried out chopsticks to eat a few Timbits to help us celebrate. Many creative techniques were observed!  Children listened to Chinese New Year music while painting paper to make Chinese lanterns which are carried around in festivals. Fun!

Kandinsky Colour Study

This art project was so much fun! We learned about the life and art of Russian artist Vassily Kandinsky. We created abstract art using oil pastels and watercolour paint. Like Kansinsky, we let the music inspire our feelings and colour choices.  We listened to classical music and opera while we worked on our pieces which had a tremendous calming effect on our young artists and led to the beautiful artwork seen here!

Inventors!

We have started our Materials and Structures unit in Science. We have been talking about Natural (wood, wool, oil, clay, gold, silver, etc.) and Man-Made (plastic, glass, steel, etc.)materials. During our centre time on Wednesday, students played the role of inventors, creating objects made of recyclable materials from our new Inventor Box (eg. house for stuffed animal).

Students also explored how to build sturdy structures with a mixture of wood from the shop, recyclable materials, and magnetic tiles. So creative!

Snowshoeing at School!

Today we enjoyed snowshoeing for all of third block!  For many students it was their first time on snowshoes. We were very lucky that it was not too cold outside and there was beautiful fresh snow falling.  The students got lots of exercise and I am guessing they will be extra hungry at dinner tonight. Check out these pictures of our snowshoeing fun!

Snowshoes at Georges Vanier!

This week we are lucky enough to have snowshoes at Georges Vanier!  The grade 1's will be snowshoeing for one block in the afternoons of Tuesday January 10th and Friday January 13th. Please make sure your child is wearing warm, athletic clothes on both of those days!
